Problem Periods Survey
Period pain and mood swings are estimated to affect between 45 and 90 per cent of women of child-bearing age and is the leading cause of absenteeism from school and work in women in their teens and 20s. Existing treatments for the condition are ineffective in almost one-third of women with moderate to severe cases. Some remedies relieve only the symptoms, rather than targeting the underlying cause of the problem, and may have unwanted side effects such as mood alteration and stomach upsets. Patients Direct is looking to find out how women’s periods affect their lives and lifestyle, by way of a 3 minute questionnaire. Specifically, we are looking at the effect on women’s quality of life at the time of their period and in between periods so we can show the full impact on their lives. In other words, the disutility of their periods.
Patients Direct participated in a major event held at the SECC in Glasgow, Girls Day Out (November 2010) which made thousands of people aware of the issue and the survey.
Recruitment for this survey is ongoing and if you would like to participate then please go to www.patientsdirect.net/ocp. We already have over 1000 women who have completed the questionnaire. Each woman’s menstrual period is unique and it is only by better understanding the problems at "that time of the month" that future treatments, and medicines, will advance and improve.
