HTA and Economic Models
Pharmacoeconomics or Health Economics has received a great deal of attention in recent times due to the introduction in many countries of an official health technology appraisal before a medical product is made available. Different bodies involved in the appraisal process take different approaches and attitude to how prescriptive they should be with outputs, but they all require certain key elements and basic data requirements. Some examples of data needs addressed by Patients Direct methodology; On the input side: · Natural history of the disease? · Treatment options? · Usual practice in the target market/ country? · Resource utilisation – doctor, nurse, other healthcare professional, in patient, out patient, investigations Output side: · Does real world effectiveness of the products/ comparators reflect their clinical trial data? · How is this effectiveness influenced by adherence and other factors? · Quality of life and utility scores It is also increasingly likely that these same data requirements will be necessary for the successful introduction of medical devices.
